Virtual / Augmented Reality

Virtual and augmented reality require a different way of interacting with computers. Interaction is based on natural inputs—touching, reaching, moving—without the tactile feedback you get in the real world.

The technology has finally become fast enough to avoid motion sickness. In 1995 we experienced VR on a headset that split 640x480 pixels across both eyes at only 10 fps. Today the minimum is 72 fps, and modern hardware can achieve it. However, each frame must be rendered in roughly 13 microseconds, so efficiency is critical. We have extensive experience optimizing for these devices.

The rise of the smartphone changed society. Early devices had tiny processors and limited capabilities, but we recognized their potential because we grew up with early PCs like the 486.

A lack of a physical keyboard created new challenges and opportunities. For the first time we could “swipe” as a command. We explored every input method — some succeeded, many did not.

Our journey started on a Macintosh. The mouse gave us precise control, and high‑resolution displays opened new possibilities. However early processors struggled to keep up, leading to performance bottlenecks. We quickly learned how vital optimization is — a lesson that has resurfaced repeatedly.
