Virtual/Augmented Reality
Virtual reality is a completely different way to interact with computers than anything before. You have to think in terms of natural inputs, like touching things, without the benefit of the feedback of actually touching them.
Virtual reality is finally fast enough so we don’t get people sick. The hardware of today is crazy fast compared to where we started. In 1995 I got to experience virtual reality for the first time, on a headset that split 640x480 pixels across both eyes. It ran at a blazing fast 10 frames per second.
These days 72 frames per second is the absolute minimum, and we have hardware that can make that happen. But even with that hardware, you have to be efficient. You have 13 microseconds to do everything to draw a frame. Optimization is a huge part of the task. You must be efficient with everything you do on these devices to make them work. We are highly experienced with this.

Mobile
The rise of the “smart” mobile phone absolutely changed the landscape of society as we knew it. These devices had tiny processors were not capable of much. But for those of us who saw the infancy of the 486, we knew what was possible.
Not having a keyboard definitely created new challenges, but also new opportunities. Previously we needed giant tablets to use our fingers directly as inputs, and even then you couldn’t see the results directly. For the first time we could “swipe” as a command to the device. We experimented with every input method we could. Some worked, many didn’t.
Desktop
For most of us, this is where it all began. In our case, the Macintosh. There was something freeing about the power of the mouse. We loved the high pixel displays. But unlike their IBM competitors, utterly held back by not having other screen modes with lower resolutions.
The processors of the time simply couldn’t keep up, and the games and software suffered for it. We muddled through, learning the hard way how important optimization was. Which we had no idea was going to return in importance multiple times in the future.
